In comparison DOK is only comprised of 4 areas: recall and reproduction, basic application, strategic thinking, and extended thinking. The main idea behind Bloom was " what type of thinking is needed?" The main idea behind Web is " how deeply do you have to understand the content to interact with it?" One similarity is how both systems start out. The base to both systems are remember ( Bloom) and recall and reproduction ( DOK). Both systems seem to build on knowledge in a different way. Blooms focuses on a verb and DOK focuses on cognitive growth that does not stop when the lesson is finished.","dateCreated":"1391888293","smartDate":"Feb 8, 2014","userCreated":{"username":"samanthagaro","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/samanthagaro","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"69510332","body":"Although, I am not very familiar with Webb's Dok, it appears to be quite similar to Bloom's Taxonomy. Bloom's Taxonomy has 6 levels, while DOK has 4 levels; however, DOK's 1st level encompasses Bloom's first 2 levels and DOK's 4th level contain Bloom's last 2 levels. DOK appears to be a more condensed version of Bloom's Taxonomy. It is also interesting that DOK sees learning as needing all the levels, while it is believed that with Bloom's taxonomy, one level can be picked and you can teach at that level.","dateCreated":"1391888386","smartDate":"Feb 8, 2014","userCreated":{"username":"kristenskoff","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/kristenskoff","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"69510374","body":"Bloom's Taxonomy and DOK are similar in that they both grow from simple, rote, details to more complex concepts or thinking. The levels are scaffolded, or supported upon each other. There are overlaps in the types of processes that are used at the different levels, including "analysis or compare\/contrast." The area where I see the biggest difference is at level 4 of DOK, where a student would be asked to synthesis information in order to interpret or apply information in an appropriate way, such as "why wouldn't communism be a current functional form of government in US?" I like the advice given by the author "The Teachable Moments" in being aware of how we question our students. More thought-provoking questions will elicit DOK processes. I suppose my advice to others would be to practice, and use DOK. It will be more routine, more familiar as we make it part of our daily lessons.","dateCreated":"1391888585","smartDate":"Feb 8, 2014","userCreated":{"username":"EllenKeenan1","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/EllenKeenan1","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"69510378","body":"A taxonomy is a scaffolding of skills and a cognitive demand is someone completing a task based on specific criteria. Bloom created six levels that moved from simple knowledge to higher level thinking. In mt past experience, I would chose a level and work at focusing my lesson on that level. In all honesty, I feel like I was taught to create the lesson first, then pick which level of Blooms it fell into. With DOK, there are only four levels of acquiring knowledge, however, there seems to be an emphasis on moving students through those levels. For example, a teacher would begin at the recall level by tapping prior knowledge. They would then proceed to the skill\/concept level by adding new information to the prior knowledge. After that, they would have the students participate in an activity for strategic thinking. Finally, and most often neglected, teachers would have students extend their thinking by having them engage in an activity that uses the knowledge. The focus is on moving through the levels with the same topic.","dateCreated":"1391888723","smartDate":"Feb 8, 2014","userCreated":{"username":"deninezielinski","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/deninezielinski","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"69510456","body":"Bloom's taxonomy was introduced to me as a way to measure you lesson's outcome. Technically you could create all of your lessons at any level. DOK is is a building effect that takes place through out a unit. However, as you move through the DOK's taxonomy, a series of levels must be mastered that require learners to move from recall to advanced application of skills. I have taken several classes that have discussed it and also my school district has begun to implement them. A major misconception that has been rectified for me was that I believed there was limited flexibility in the materials teachers were able to use in the classroom for ELA. I was under the impression that the core standards were limiting a teacher's creativity with instruction; however, I have come to realize it is just the opposite. The core standards provide a guide line of resources that are appropriate for each grade level so that teachers can use that in selecting other materials. Also, I did not know the concept of a "staircase" of increasing complexity in the framework of the Common Core Standards in ELAs; as well as, the balance of literature and informational text. The information has helped me grasp a better understanding of how the Core Standards address literacy in all content areas, not just ELAs.
