They can most clearly be seen in Madeline Hunter’s framework for context. “Capturing students’ interest” is clearly found in Hunter’s anticipatory set. “Explaining the strategy’s purpose and the students’ role” is evident in the area where Hunter says teachers should explain the objective before beginning the lesson. “Teach the thinking imbedded in the strategy” aligns with Hunter’s area of providing input. “Using discussion and questioning techniques to extend student thinking” is a natural expansion of checking for understanding. “Asking students to synthesize and transfer their learning” takes up both the guided and independent practice modules of Hunter’s theory. “Reflection” and closure are synonymous.

This information assists me in the delivery of Core Standards aligned instruction because following Hunter’s framework for lesson planning will help to scaffold students to the higher order thinking skills laid out in Webb’s Depth of Knowledge circle. This format helps to produce well organized and thoroughly thought out lesson plans that gently guide the learner from what they already know to what must be learned in the end. The lessons build upon not only what the student already knows, but also upon what has already been learned by past scholars. Hunter’s framework aligns with The Six Tips nicely in that the teacher can act as lecturer and as facilitator for learning.
I chose the 'Discovery Learning' theory. All six tips can be touched upon in this theory. Its given that the capturing the student's interests, students putting all of their findings together to use in new content, and leaving time for reflection are easily used within the Discovery Learning. The other three tips are more teacher driven and class discussion based but still could be easily embedded before the lesson is started to give the students an even more clear focus and direction.

Within the core standards, it would definitely be difficult to use this theory across the curriculum for every standard and/or lesson. I could see if being used more frequently in the Social Sciences and related arts but not in the math core standards based curriculum that I currently teach.
I don't think we have to post here but I will add my two cents. Being a Science teacher I too selected the Discovery Learning theory. I think the person who came up with the 6 tips wrote this theory. Kids being naturally curious, a topic that captures their interest can always be found. Pick the correct level of difficulty, give them a background procedural and conceptual knowledge, inform them that patience is a virtue and you have a recipe for success. I love teaching Science!!
I chose the contemporary learning theory of constructivism. This theory suggests that people learn by using what they already know to create new understandings. I found that a lot of emphasis is placed on the teaching. Teachers must keep in mind prior knowledge and previous experiences of the students when teaching and build on that foundation. Two aspects of cognitive constructivism include “meaningful reception learning” and “discovery learning.” Meaningful reception learning focuses on what the learner already knows and discovery learning focuses on putting students in situations where they can discover ideas for themselves. This theory and the six methods would be great for teachers to incorporate into their lessons. I feel the students would enjoy and be proud of making conclusions and discovering information more independently. However, working with students who have severe receptive and expressive language disabilities, I do not believe this would be the best approach for me. Especially with younger students who have very limited background knowledge. I think ultimately, this would be a great goal to strive for, but not realistic for each student I serve.
@ Mr. Blough--you are correct.
